Tip for August: Measuring Equipment

A tape measure is a must for every dressmaker but please don’t use the old fabric one you found in you’re granny’s sewing basket – it’s probably stretched! A plastic one is just fine and one with inches on one side and centimetres on the other is best as many pattern markings are still in imperial measurements.

You will also need a good old fashioned ruler or even better a large acrylic set square. Some specialist pattern drafting ones will have curves incorporated into them, this is useful for armhole and neckline drawing.

Tip for July: Scissors

An essential piece of dressmaking kit are good scissors. (I’m old school I still prefer these to a rotary cutter). There’s something about the sound of shears cutting through fabric…. Treat yourself and keep them well hidden from everyone else in the house!

You will need a pair for cutting fabric (shears) and ONLY use them for fabric, they should fit comfortably in your hand and not be too heavy to handle. The handles should be at a slight angle to the blades enabling the bottom blade to sit flat on the cutting surface. You will also need a small pair of trimming scissors, mine are approx. 13cm long and the bottom blade is pointed and the top curved at the end. Great for unpicking and trimming seams.

Tip for June: Pins

There are a boggling array of different pins out there, all made for a different craft but for dressmaking I love to use fine long pins.

Good quality ones should slide in and out of the fabric smoothly without snagging or leaving a noticeable hole. My favourites are the classic dressmakers pins made of mild tempered steel 33mm long and .61mm wide. However, glass-headed pins are handy for marking where your notches are on your pattern whilst cutting out, to avoid missing them.
